DSP Rene Garcia – Commission District 13

Residents continue to suffer as the cost of housing continues to rise, eating away at their monthly budgets. I will work to create more Public-Private Partnerships in order to get more affordable housing built. As your commissioner, I will work with county and state agencies to develop a plan to create more workforce housing specifically focused on helping teachers and first responders.

My first priority when I arrive at County Hall will be to alleviate the tax burden for seniors. My plan will freeze property taxes for those seniors who have lived in their homes for at least thirty years. The cost of living in Miami Dade continues to rise and our seniors are being forced to make extraordinary sacrifices. I will continue to champion the issues that impact our seniors in order to bring much needed relief to their lives.

In my time as a public servant, I have strived to ensure that our tax dollars were properly allocated to programs that would provide the most benefit to our community. As your county commissioner, I will ensure that our budget reflects the needs of our community and not of any special interest.

I will work to end the stigma surrounding mental health. Mental health and substance abuse treatment programs are fundamental for the safety and wellbeing of our community. As your county commissioner, I will work with all providers to create a comprehensive system that meets the needs of the families that are facing this crisis in our community. I will also work closely with my colleagues to invest in HIV awareness campaigns. Unfortunately, Miami Dade leads the country in new HIV cases. This is unacceptable and action needs to be taken in order to stop the spread of this disease.

Paying attention to the environment is key to the survival of Miami Dade County. I have always understood its importance to our community and our economy. We are world renown for our scenic beaches and natural wonders like the Everglades and as your commissioner, I will work to ensure that our beaches, waterways, and the Everglades are protected.

As a community, we must change the way we address the issue of violence in our neighborhoods. What happens in one community is not mutually exclusive to another. We are all residents of Miami Dade County. As your commissioner, I am committed to working with my colleagues to focus on developing programs that can have a meaningful impact and reduce this senseless violence.

Rene Garcia is a product of Northwest Dade. He was born and raised in the City of Hialeah. Rene’s passion for serving his community began more than 20 years ago as a Councilman in the City of Hialeah. As a State Representative, and then as a State Senator, Rene focused on helping those most in need. Giving a voice to the voiceless has always been Rene’s number one priority. He advocated for comprehensive reforms to our mental health laws, sponsored legislation to end surprise medical bills after any hospitalization, promoted the importance of expanding health care services for children through the Florida KidCare program, and has been a staunch advocate for the seniors in our community.

Today, Rene is running for the county commission because he truly believes in the importance of balancing the economic progress and growth of a community with the social needs of its people. Only by working together can we address the pressing issues of our community such as workforce housing, the environment, our crumbling infrastructure & safety in our communities. Through a pragmatic approach we will be able to leave this community a better place for our children.
